Situation Highlights  (Updated 09/03/21)

In the aftermath of the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that rocked southwestern Haiti on August 22, 2021, over 2,200 people are dead and over 320 remain missing.

The dire health situation remains the most pressing concern, as 4 hospitals were destroyed and 20 hospitals have been damaged. Those still operating are completely overwhelmed, lacking sufficient personnel and medical supplies.

According to Haitian Civil Protection, more than 130,000 homes have been destroyed or damaged, leaving thousands homeless and creating pressing shelter and WASH needs.

This earthquake was the second deadliest in the last 25 years in Latin America. It was larger and on the same fault line as that which occurred in 2010, which killed more than 220,000 people and triggered tens of thousands of landslides. Compounding matters, this earthquake struck during a significant political crisis, ongoing since the president of Haiti was assassinated on July 7, 2021.
